Technical Details

- Defensive Skill Stick - NHL 08 gave you true offensive prowess with the Skill Stick, and this year, you have the power to stop it. Block passing lanes with 360 control of your stick or kill an opponent's one timer game by lifting their stick just before they receive a pass
- Be A Pro - A dynamic 3rd person camera puts you in the role of one player on a team. The Performance Tracker will rate your play in over 50 categories, to make sure you know what parts of your game need to improve. Start your career off in the ranks of the AHL and become one of the best in the NHL. Your very own hockey card will mark your progress, from your rookie beginnings to a potentially legendary ending
- Create-A-Play Breakouts - create a winning strategy in both online and offline play. Make breakout plays from your own zone or set up behind your net and tell your right winger to look for the flip dump from the defenseman
- NHL 94 Controls - Hit, pass, shoot, and score using the simplified two-button control system featured in NHL 94. So even if you're new to the game, you can challenge the best of the best
- One-handed Dekes - When you are skating in on a breakaway, tap the puck to one hand and tuck the puck behind a sprawling goalie for the ultimate finish

 "Total dominance doesn't = fun; also doesn't = realism" 2009-08-27
By someone (North America)
First the positives...

- On ice graphics are significantly better than 2K9.

- Rosters were more up to date regarding the start of the 08/09 season, including salaries (for the most part).

- Can play and interact more w/ AHL affiliates. AHL rosters are more accurate.

- Could be argued that in-game commentary is better.

- Realistic salary cap.

- Euro leagues (if you're into that, but the quality of players is less, so why play? You might as well put Beer Leagues in there. I only used Euro leagues to add actual players to the NHL free agent pool.)

- The computer is "somewhat" realistic about accepting trades proposed by the user. However, the MAIN decision point is on overall rating. Not salary (although it doesn't let you burst the cap), or age, or needs of the team.

Negatives:

- The difference in "difficulty" settings is simplistic (not many sliders are adjusted).

- Dynasty Mode: Upgrades are only apparently issued and awarded to the user. (Not other teams whose performance would have warranted similar upgrades. So, as the user's team gets better, the other teams stay mediocre.) The better you get, the more you win. The more you win, the more upgrades. This quickly gets out of hand.

- The computer is very trade happy. Non-user teams trade quite often. Sometimes a player gets traded twice in the same season. And sometimes these are high profile players. This is unrealistic. A GM would not go out of his way to acquire someone, only to trade him again. Very unlikely.

- Contract structuring is not realistic. Max duration is 3 years.

- This is a biggie... The scoring is disproportionate between computer and user. The computer can only score 2 ways, maybe 3. 1) on the "rush". It has very little to do whether it's an odd man rush (although that helps the chances) or not. The computer will simply take 2 forwards, and split the net, and regardless of the # of defenders, will attempt to one time. Many times it works, even though the angle of the shooter only gives him a small net space that the goalie has to defend. Not a big deal, except it's very difficult for the user to mimic when THEY are on offense. 2) rebounds. 3) the fluke goal. The computer rarely works the boards, or cycles the puck. It hardly ever floods the zone, and never attempts deflections. 90% of the time, they'll use 2 forwards against 4 defenders, and somehow manage to get the one timer by a supposedly clueless user goalie. However, for the user, the easiest way to score is to go Glove High on a left handed goalie, by skating across the crease away from the top right (from the shooter's perspective).

- Cannot diffentiate sliders for computer and user separately. So.... If you decrease the shot accuracy for yourself. Guess who else's shot accuracy decreases? The computer! So you can't artificially make the game more realistic.

Most of my team are left handed shots. I use 5 minute periods. I use default settings for penalties, and shooting. The difficulty is as "high" as possible. I averaged over 5 goals per game in my first season, and my opponent had less than 2 goals per game. I broke Paul Coffey's record for goals by a defencemen in a season. I almost broke the Oilers record for goals by a team in a season. Now, I'm in the second season. I'm at the 30th game. Two of my players have 31 goals. I'm averaging over 8 goals per game! (It's the upgrades, I'm even BETTER!). My top two lines are 1-6 in terms of points. It's ridiculous. It's nowhere even fun. I own goalies. Even w/ my defencemen. I'm not bragging. The game is just NOT realistic. Thus it's not fun. Often times I beat teams w/ double digits. I lambasted Vancouver 18-1 the other day. Ridiculous.

The only way I can imagine to make the game realistic is to handicap myself by only allow scoring if all my players are in the zone (no goals from the rush). No goals from faceoffs.

NHL 2K9 has much more realism. Granted, the graphics leave some to be desired, but there are more sliders. And you can differentiate between the sliders for the user and computer.

This is an arcade game, w/ good graphics. Almost not a hockey game. You might as well put Super Mario and Luigi, and the Princess in the game.

"Fun Hockey game, although can seem a bit rigged at times." 2009-07-12
By N. D. Schramm (Chicago, IL)
Gameplay: 9/10

Sound: 10/10

Graphics: 9/10

So after playing this game for a while, it is definitely fun and great graphics (i recommend upgrading to the component cable if you have a hdtv. The difference was amazing when i switched). The 'veteran' controls take some getting used to if you haven't owned a previous version, which was my case, but it doesn't take long to pick them up. The fighting aspect is kind of neat, although I tend to lose most fights for some reason. I guess i should fight more often to get used to those controls as well.

My one complaint so far is that you have to take a ridiculous amount of shots to score a goal. Most games i play i have well over 100 shots and about 6 goals on average. On the flip side, the computer is amazingly good at scoring. They love one-timers and are very coordinated in this respect. Unfortunately i can't get my team to be as prone to charging the net to set up these shots. In these same games, the CPU can score 5 or 6 games with only about 50 shots, sometimes less. Moral of the story is: be prepared to shoot and shoot often in order to win the game. Even if you do this, there are games where the CPU goalie is omniscient and you find yourself out-shooting the CPU 4:1 and still not winning. Although realistic, the season is very long and I'm still not even half way through the first season as each game takes over an hour to play.

"Solid, but not what I was hoping for." 2009-06-15
By billy (Washington, DC)
On its own, this is a fine, entertaining game. The game play is solid, and you can definitely spend many hours keeping yourself busy with the Be A Pro feature and building a dynasty franchise with the most up-to-date player database.

That said, this product really does pale in comparison to the PS3 and 360 versions. For instance, the Be A Pro feature on the PS2 port is a completely gutted version of that which is offered on the nextgen consoles. I still enjoyed the feature just fine, but I was expecting so much more, having heard what people were doing with the XBOX and PS3 edition.

Oh well, lesson learned - I went out an bought a cheapo XBOX, and I will retire the PS2. It has served me well over the years, but its time has passed.

 "PS2..." 2009-06-10
By Evan Welle
It is not as fun as NHL 09 on PS3 or Xbox 360. I has a little different controls and isn't even close to the realistic gamplay as the others. It is a fun game with friends because it is a basic sport game.

"No online play - UNFORTUNATE." 2009-05-25
By Model (Rochester, NY)
This game is similar to the '08 version with only seemingly slight modifications to player movement. The biggest "downer" is that there is no online play (which I was unaware of until the game arrived at my doorstep and I checked out the pakaging).
