A kind friend brought over the flag pennant knowing my love of the Cardinals and of bright, cheerful things in general. This baby is no pushover, either. It's nearly a square yard of flapping, screaming Card Fever. I have three poles outside my window, and this pennant fits nicely via the top sleeve so that neighbors can't help but notice that a Cards fan lives in their hood. One or two of them have teased me, saying that my Cards banner seems to be slightly larger and hung higher than the traditional US flag (the "Stars and Stripes Forever"), but as I tell them, that is just an optical illusion due to the color red being so prominent on the banner, both on bird and background, what you might call the "field."
Even those who don't follow the ballgames will recognize the familiar red bird, its good nature and its competitiveness with other birds. The cardinal, as we all know, has staying power. It's the team that boasted over the years such Hall of Famers as Stan "the Man" Musial, and Grover Cleveland Alexander, not to mention Cy Young himself, Dizzy Dean, Rabbit Maranville, Leo Durocher, the Fordham Flash Frankie Frisch, and Enos Slaughter, just to name a few. The banner is as big as a magic flying carpet; let it take you away on a never-ending tour of imagination and baseball firepower.
First thing in the morning, I will order another one through Amazon.com, and take my chances. Which if my neighbors and/or fellow Cards fans shall I gift with this red surprise? Not everyone has the big personality it takes to display a red flag outside your front door, especially here in dim, foggy old San Francisco, where our own ballteam has plenty of vociferous boosters.
